Melbourne – There was one of the biggest surprises in the second round of the first Grand Slam tournament of the year. The one seeded number 5 Daniil Medvedevone of the favorites for the title, had to give way to the 19-year-old American Learner Tien admit defeat. In a highly exciting match, the young underdog prevailed 6:3, 7:6, 6:7, 1:6, 7:6 and thus ensured the former world number one’s early exit.

A performance full of self-confidence

Learner Tien, who made his way into the main draw via a wildcard Australian Open showed from the start that he would not be intimidated by the big stage and his prominent opponent. With courageous baseline play, precise returns and an impressive service game, he repeatedly put Medvedev in trouble. “I wanted to show my best tennis and enjoy competing against one of the best players in the world,” said Tien, visibly moved after his triumph.

Medvedev without solutions

The 27-year-old Medvedev, who had already reached the final of the Australian Open in 2021, did not find his usual rhythm. While he dominated at times with his groundstrokes, unusual mistakes kept creeping in. Tien showed greater nerves, especially in the crucial moments, for example in the tiebreak of the first set or at the break points in the third set.

“Today wasn’t my day. I didn’t move well and had difficulties with his style of play,” Medvedev analyzed after the match. “He deserved to win.”

A new star in the tennis sky?

For Learner Tien, the victory over Medvedev is the biggest success of his young career so far. The teenager, who gained experience last year primarily on the Challenger Tour, has impressively attracted attention with this success. Experts see him as a great talent who could cause a sensation in the coming years.

“This is a dream come true. I’ve worked hard and it’s incredible that it’s paying off now,” explained Tien, who will now face Frenchman Adrian Mannarino in the third round.

Impact on the tournament

Medvedev’s early exit also has an impact on the rest of the tournament. Some of the top favorites still remain in the race with Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, but the loss of a Grand Slam champion like Medvedev opens the door for potential surprises.

Learner Tien will now look to continue his successful run in Melbourne. After this impressive performance, anything seems possible for the young American.
